Petricor – Jorge Graça – from June 21th to October 16th, 2024

Petrichor derives from the Greek words “petra” (stone) and “ichor,” which, in Greek mythology, is the liquid that runs through the veins of the gods. The term was coined by scientists to describe the aroma derived from an oil produced by certain plants during periods of drought, which is absorbed by the earth and clayey rocks.

During rain, oil evaporates into the air, producing a characteristic odor. It is believed that humans enjoy the smell of rain because their ancestors depended on it for survival.

Jorge Graça’s project is based on an archaeological perspective that identifies ancestral knowledge and traditions, with  Petricor  evoking the urgency of preserving threatened ecosystems and implementing regenerative processes that ensure sustainable use of the vital and finite water resource.

The “Petricor” exhibition was developed within the scope of the Sustentar Project and is curated by Jayne Dyer and Virgílio Ferreira.
