The Angel of History – Margarida Alves and Jorge Camões – from January 28th to June 14th, 2026

The Angel of History is an exhibition that starts from the perspective of a distant future, where the vestiges of humanity are observed as layers of time. Based on the thought of Walter Benjamin and the image of Paul Klee’s Angelus Novus, the exhibition reflects on the idea of progress, the Anthropocene, and the relationship between past, present, and future.
Among sculptures, installations, and photographic processes, elements such as a Paleolithic canoe, a parched earth floor, contaminated waters from an abandoned mine, and cyanotype images of trees appear. The works reveal processes of continuous transformation, where matter, time, life, and disappearance coexist.
More than a monumental look at history, the exhibition proposes an attention to subtle gestures and forms of care, questioning what exists today and what may exist in the future.
The exhibition opens next Wednesday, January 28th, and will be on display at the Museu da Luz until June 14th.
The exhibition is curated by Margarida Alves and Jorge Camões, and the exhibition is directed by Sofia Marçal.
Partners in the project include EDIA, the Museu da Luz, the MUHNAC – National Museum of Natural History and Science, the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon, and the CIEBA Research Centre.
